songs you should hear: destroya and vampire money
This is my favourite MCR album - maybe a controversial take. There's only one skip on this album (Sing.. Sorry, I hate when artists use "all the boys and girls" type lines lol) and the highs (destroya, vampire money, scarecrow) are REALLY high for me. This is also like their pop-iest album, so maybe I'm a fake emo enjoyer.. I got into MCR kind of late, my first real phase for them was when I was 17 (everyone I know has been a fan since they were 12 or 13) but ooh did this album come at just the right time for me, 13 years after its release..
I love Gerard Way's voice, its so satisfying to listen to. Especially on Destroya, it gives me chills. All the references to god and heaven and hell in MCR's albums are always kinda lost on me as someone with 0 ties to religion (positive or otherwise) but I appreciate the aesthetics they add lol. I also don't believe in god or luck! I enjoy the minimal adlibs and extra speaking parts edited in, like in Vampire money, I think they're silly and add a lot to the texture of the noise. I love how full all the songs feel, even when in slower moments theres still SO much going into my headphones, its a really fulfilling music experience overall.
The rhythms man the rhythms. The lead guitar is so incredible on all these tracks - I'm usually not one to pay attention to the guitar particularly (im a bassist and a vocalist first) but man they do it right! Incredibly fun to sing along to (i think thats the most important purpose of emo music) and to play the parts for alike. I like the slight variations on genre they do, like on Summertime where they adopt these fun sparkly synths and percussion that reminds me of 80s music. Planetary GO is way more pop than anything else on the album, but it checks all my needs for a pop song and is a perfect song to me.
