My Thoughts on Hyperpop as a Genre
Okay so! Most artists involved in this 'scene' really fucking hate the term hyperpop, and I totally understand why. They say it tried to lump too many sounds together into one word, and that hyperpop as a genre isn't even a thing, because it has no unified sound. I see this point a little bit, but honestly do not agree. I see hyperpop as more of a big genre name, rather than trying to pinpoint one particular sound like many people think its trying to describe. Its like how rock or pop or rnb are huge genre titles with subgenres within it. I use the word hyperpop like this to describe music to my friends who may not know anything about the artists I'm describing. I think its more helpful than just calling it internet music like I do sometimes, there IS a sound to hyperpop.
That was in defense of hyperpop as a genre, but what about as a scene? I still think its helpful. Yes, there are subcommunities of particular musicians, you know like there is ANYWHEREEEE, but the scene is so interconnected that anyone new I found most definitely has collabed or is friends with someone I already know. The issue with this is sometimes artists who are just friends w/ these people, but absolutely don't make hyperpop, then get called it & I understand that frustration. For example, 8485 frequently gets called hyperpop when she literally has like 4 solo songs out of a discography of 30+ songs that would be called hyperpop. Her other stuff doesn't even resemble hyperpop at all, she isnt hyperpop. Some artists however, like most members of webcage, don't make super hyperpop stuff Anymore, but the influence is still so obvious in their music that I think it's fair to call them hyperpop adjacent or hyperpop descendants.
I'm sorry to all the artists who got an itch in their ear from me calling them hyperpop. But until there is a better, more well-liked and popularized term for the sound + community, I will continue to use it.
