i know theres something left for you by dynastic
songs you should hear: caldecott + lake city quiet pills
This is one of, if not my favourite, albums of 2022!! Although I discovered it in 2023, its just fucking incredible man. I first found dynastic through their collaborations on Webcage, who I also highly recommend if you like hyperpop descendent music, but their solo work is SO FUCKING GOOD. "i knwo theres something left for you" is a lovely blend of hyperpop/digicore and emo elements, probably the best combo I've ever heard. The album centers a lot around relationships, particularly teetering on the edge of a breakup, and that was so perfect for me when I found it, so its very personally meaningful to me.
My favourite songs are "lake city quiet pills" and "caldecott", for similar reasons. The instrumentals of each are so pointy and sharp and distinctly digital, with really meaningful words laid over them in a fun way. Caldecott is just so catchy and fun and polygon coves feature is just so perfectly blended in. The break at the end of lake city quiet pills brings the whole thing together so well, I love it so much. I love how clearly modern these songs are. In a world where so many artists are currently trying to replicate old styles from 2000s & before (nothing against that, I do enjoy it a lot of the time!!), it is SO refreshing to hear something so clearly of its time.
Dynastics lyricism is SO good like. "lake city quiet pills" is my absolute favourite in that regard. "In between the selfish greed, and the want to be loved in the absence of green" is such a fucking BANGER line for relationships riddled with mismatched priorities and drug use. I also really love in "caldecott" - "If I go, will you hold the fort down? Will we last if I'm, not around?". Holy shit. Like such a great great way to describe relationships with neglect or absence, so fucking good. I love the way dynastic describes relationships and emotions in general- check out their other song "Seeker Missile" for another song full of great descriptors of self destruction.
It rode on the coattails of the genre, but I really think this is one of the best albums to ever come out of hyperpop - altho that term is usually disliked by the artists (read my take on that here lol). This album really takes the best aspects of the genre/community- fun synths and noises, sometimes silly lyrics or scenarios, edited vocals- and puts them together so well, especially on the two songs I recommended. Something I really liked about the vocals on this album is the way they're edited allows dynastic to appear as two different people, when its really just one person. Theres their natural lower register and then the hyperpop-style highpitched vocals that will both appear in the same song. Another artist that does that really well is Underscores.
